What is a good career advancement strategy to becoming a construction executive?

The best approach to achieving a career position goal in construction is to get advice from someone who is in that position or has been in that position. Develop your professional network with those you want to learn from, mentors who can help guide your career. Try to find someone in that position who you admire and aspire to be. You will find there are many paths to the top, and many paths to whatever position you are seeking but getting advice from someone who has "been there" can be invaluable to your career. Mentors can also help you plan out your steps and best path to take during your journey.

It is also important to make sure the day-to-day responsibilities and duties are explained so that you know what you are getting into in seeking such a position. Too often we tend to have unrealistic ideas of what it will be like to hold a certain position, only to find out later the price you have to pay for performing successfully in that role is overwhelming and not really suited to your skill set or temperament. Many people want to be self-employed or the top executive in the office, but they may not be to attracted to the position when they learn it takes 60 hour work weeks, or the stress of operating under budget, behind schedule and understaffed at the most inconvenient times.

It is always a good idea to have a long-term, position goal in mind, and specific plans to obtaining each step along the way so that you can work towards achieving this position.
